Netflix: Novices & NabobsLyra Jane -- Tuesday, November 12, 2002 -- 03:02:44 AM
What's in your rental queue? What should be there? This is the thread to discuss the Net's gift to DVD players.
And don't forget to sign up with netflix!
(All users will see what tags exist for a thread. Please tag carefully!)
I just signed on today, after the umpteenth recommendation. Here's what's in my queue:
- Lawrence of Arabia
- Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys
- Importance of Being Earnest (2002)
- Top Secret
- The Wedding Singer
It's easy to get overwhelmed -- there's so much there! How long a queue should I build?
I have 27 or so in my queue. Some are things I want to see again, some are things that I've seen, but HBW hasn't, some are recommendations from here, and some are just things I missed in the theater and want to see.
The fun thing for me is to get online and rearrange my queue, depending on my mood of the moment.
I'm also a newbie, and I'm having trouble finding movies on the site. I assumed that they had basically everything out on DVD, but I keep on looking for kid movies that I know are out (the Lorax, The Cat in the Hat) and Netflix doesn't seem to have them. I'm not sure if they're less encyclopedic than I thought, or if I'm just having trouble with their search function.
I haven't looked much for kid movies, but they've been pretty well stocked otherwise. Well, classics tend to be spotty.
Have you done the rating movies thing? I must be consistent, because after rating a batch of movies, the new recommendations were all movies I had seen and liked.
I have 160 movies in my queue.
I thought it was normal to have a lot of movies. I strongly recommend it.
I'm now up to 28 films in the queue. It's almost daunting! If I got through 3-4 a week, that's 2 mos. worth of films.
And Cal, I added Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 on your rec.
The Taking of Pelham 1...2...3... is an incredibly great movie. My father's favorite.
I need to buy a DVD player so I can play in the Netflix thread.
I usually go to Amazon and get recommendations, and then go add them on Netflix. I have 43 in my queue. Next to come is the first of the Band of Brothers series.
I have about 60 in my queue at any given time. I get uncomfortable if I have less than 55 or so. I've rated 434 movies so far - sometimes I just go on a rating movies jag and it helps with the recommendations. Except that the movies on the queue are for the whole family. That includes Independent Movie Me, Sci Fi Movie Beloved, Anime Freak Youngest Daughter and British Buff Eldest Daughter. I'm sure the database scratches its head before offering viewing suggestions.
The first five on my list (because I know you're all fascinated) are:
1. Jeeves and Wooster: Season 4: Disc 2
2. The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys
3. Star Wars: Episode II
4. Y Tu Mama Tambien
5. Scotland, PA
Some other movies I would add, or consider adding:
- The Third Man
- Black Narcissus
- Get Carter
- Local Hero
- Invasion of the Body Snatchers (both Siegal and Kaufman versions)
- The Thing (both Hawks and Carpenter versions)
- Ordinary People
- Junior Bonner
- The Man Who Would Be King
- I Know Where I'm Going
- Monkey Business
- The Stunt Man
- Talk of the Town
- Taking of Pelham One Two Three
- Big Deal on Madonna Street
- The Sweet Hereafter
- The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934)
- You Can Count on Me
I have 120+ on my list. I always think that's too much and I'll never get through them, but it's easy to reshuffle based on what I'm in the mood to see.
I second the "I Know Where I'm Going!" recommendation. The beauty of netflix is that I've seen some real gems that I never, ever would have been able to find in Blockbuster or Hollywood Video. Another amazing find is "Aimee and Jaguar."
My top ten on the queue:
The Secret of Roan Inish
The Deep End
Upstairs, Downstairs: First Season: Disc 4
The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys
Ha! I laugh at you all with your puny queues. I have 445 movies in my queue right now. I blame CalGal, she suggested Netflix in the first place.
Glengarry Glen Ross
The Brother from Another Planet
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Woman of the Year
Salt of the Earth/Hollywood Ten
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
I tend to go on queue-building binges -- everything I can find with a particular actor or director.
I have 95 movies in queue. I printed this thread out and will probably break 100 soon.
I currently have:
The next 10 on my list are:
Snow Falling on Cedars
Boys Don't Cry
Gods and Monsters
The Anniversary Party
A Simple Plan
The Big Kahuna
Best in Show
That doesn't mean that these are the next 10 movies I'll see because I usually change my queue based on my mood when I return a couple movies.
I find that the classic movie selection is thinner than I would like.
