What's in your rental queue? What should be there? This is the thread to discuss the Net's gift to DVD players.

And don't forget to sign up with netflix!

Clearly unable to post here.

I just signed on today, after the umpteenth recommendation. Here's what's in my queue:

  1. Lawrence of Arabia
  2. Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys
  3. X-Men
  4. Importance of Being Earnest (2002)
  5. Top Secret
  6. The Wedding Singer

It's easy to get overwhelmed -- there's so much there! How long a queue should I build?

Queen of Drama -- Monday, November 11, 2002 -- 10:12:47 PM -- 2 of 2254

I have 27 or so in my queue. Some are things I want to see again, some are things that I've seen, but HBW hasn't, some are recommendations from here, and some are just things I missed in the theater and want to see.

The fun thing for me is to get online and rearrange my queue, depending on my mood of the moment.

“Our country right or wrong. When right, to be kept right; when wrong, to be put right.” -- Sen. Carl Schurz

I'm also a newbie, and I'm having trouble finding movies on the site. I assumed that they had basically everything out on DVD, but I keep on looking for kid movies that I know are out (the Lorax, The Cat in the Hat) and Netflix doesn't seem to have them. I'm not sure if they're less encyclopedic than I thought, or if I'm just having trouble with their search function.

Queen of Drama -- Monday, November 11, 2002 -- 10:17:36 PM -- 4 of 2254

I haven't looked much for kid movies, but they've been pretty well stocked otherwise. Well, classics tend to be spotty.

Have you done the rating movies thing? I must be consistent, because after rating a batch of movies, the new recommendations were all movies I had seen and liked.

I remember a time, back in the late 90s, when I thought nonsense like this mattered somewhat more than I do now. Now I see well-educated people yammering about the birth control choices of their daughters, or gay marriage, and I think they are morons.

I have 160 movies in my queue.

Queen of Drama -- Monday, November 11, 2002 -- 10:20:13 PM -- 6 of 2254

Always have to put us to shame, don't you? (g) We're still in training...

I thought it was normal to have a lot of movies. I strongly recommend it.

Clearly unable to post here.

I'm now up to 28 films in the queue. It's almost daunting! If I got through 3-4 a week, that's 2 mos. worth of films.

And Cal, I added Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 on your rec.

Lori Dee -- Monday, November 11, 2002 -- 11:23:45 PM -- 9 of 2254
Axial tilt is the reason for the season.

I don't keep much in my queue because I am always shuffling stuff around.

The Taking of Pelham 1...2...3... is an incredibly great movie. My father's favorite.

I need to buy a DVD player so I can play in the Netflix thread.

I have 45 or so in my queue. We watched the Matrix last night, which neither of us had seen. Entertaining.

you can fight it, or you can rock out to it

I usually go to Amazon and get recommendations, and then go add them on Netflix. I have 43 in my queue. Next to come is the first of the Band of Brothers series.

One raises the eyebrow

I have about 60 in my queue at any given time. I get uncomfortable if I have less than 55 or so. I've rated 434 movies so far - sometimes I just go on a rating movies jag and it helps with the recommendations. Except that the movies on the queue are for the whole family. That includes Independent Movie Me, Sci Fi Movie Beloved, Anime Freak Youngest Daughter and British Buff Eldest Daughter. I'm sure the database scratches its head before offering viewing suggestions.

The first five on my list (because I know you're all fascinated) are:

1. Jeeves and Wooster: Season 4: Disc 2
2. The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys
3. Star Wars: Episode II
4. Y Tu Mama Tambien
5. Scotland, PA

I've added 2 and 4 from your list!

Ha! Let me know if you want the whole 61 strong list! It includes a dozen or more anime selections, though.

Piccie -- Tuesday, November 12, 2002 -- 01:27:48 AM -- 16 of 2254

Does Netflix have video games as well?

CalGal -- Tuesday, November 12, 2002 -- 02:53:45 AM -- 17 of 2254

Some other movies I would add, or consider adding:

  • The Third Man
  • Black Narcissus
  • Get Carter
  • Local Hero
  • Invasion of the Body Snatchers (both Siegal and Kaufman versions)
  • The Thing (both Hawks and Carpenter versions)
  • Ordinary People
  • Junior Bonner
  • The Man Who Would Be King
  • I Know Where I'm Going
  • Chinatown
  • Conspiracy
  • Monkey Business
  • The Stunt Man
  • Talk of the Town
  • Taking of Pelham One Two Three
  • Rififi
  • Big Deal on Madonna Street
  • Diabolique
  • The Sweet Hereafter
  • The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934)
  • You Can Count on Me

"Lack of the faculty for success in homemaking, while biologically abnormal, is no disgrace."

I have 120+ on my list. I always think that's too much and I'll never get through them, but it's easy to reshuffle based on what I'm in the mood to see.

I second the "I Know Where I'm Going!" recommendation. The beauty of netflix is that I've seen some real gems that I never, ever would have been able to find in Blockbuster or Hollywood Video. Another amazing find is "Aimee and Jaguar."

My top ten on the queue:

Amadeus

The Secret of Roan Inish

The Deep End

Upstairs, Downstairs: First Season: Disc 4

The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys

Charade

Iris

Ghost World

Avalon

Nurse Betty

if you can't tell family members they are bugging the shit out of you you are going to have a life full of bugged out shit [j. ross]

Ha! I laugh at you all with your puny queues. I have 445 movies in my queue right now. I blame CalGal, she suggested Netflix in the first place.

#1-10:
Glengarry Glen Ross
The Brother from Another Planet
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Adam's Rib
Short #1
Woman of the Year
Salt of the Earth/Hollywood Ten
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
Time Code
Julien Donkey-Boy

I tend to go on queue-building binges -- everything I can find with a particular actor or director.

Bethany F. -- Tuesday, November 12, 2002 -- 12:07:05 PM -- 20 of 2254
MOTHER: Don't you remember? We do NOT use ADJECTIVES!

I have 95 movies in queue. I printed this thread out and will probably break 100 soon.

I currently have:

The Apostle

Blow

Chinatown

The next 10 on my list are:

The Others

Training Day

Snow Falling on Cedars

Boys Don't Cry

Gods and Monsters

The Anniversary Party

A Simple Plan

The Big Kahuna

Butterfield 8

Best in Show

That doesn't mean that these are the next 10 movies I'll see because I usually change my queue based on my mood when I return a couple movies.

I find that the classic movie selection is thinner than I would like.
