1. ACA - repeal and replace

2. A mini- Scalia (and a second mini-Scalia if Ginsberg croaks)

3. Border enforcement and kicking out the incorrigibles

4. Tear up the Iran deal

5. Cut spending

Quoting the actual words of Trump is an unfair tactic because he inevitably sounds like an idiot about any subject on which he speaks.

Trade.

That's what won it for him.

I'm not disagreeing with the items in post 1. Those are all good, but regardless of whether it's been a GOP thing to be free trade, he has to do better on that for the American worker.

I also think he has to keep the same style he has had until now. He doesn't have to be gauche and personally embarrassing, but he should keep the press in its place and be unapologetic about the issues his voters support.

Ricky Ricardo -- Friday, November 11, 2016 -- 04:32:28 PM -- 4 of 1214

I agree about trade, but that's a longer haul, no?

It's supposed to be his strong suit: negotiating great deals. Plus, I think it's something that actually motivates him and he's interested in.

ACA (which should be easier) is something I bet he has a completely indifferent/pragmatic approach to. If it was working, he'd be fine with it (i.e., no philosophical disagreement).

Ricky Ricardo -- Friday, November 11, 2016 -- 04:37:57 PM -- 6 of 1214

Agreed.

And of course I'll be almost as astonished as I am at his victory if spending gets cut.

I remember a time, back in the late 90s, when I thought nonsense like this mattered somewhat more than I do now. Now I see well-educated people yammering about the birth control choices of their daughters, or gay marriage, and I think they are morons.

Immediately:

  1. Scalia's replacement. It would be awesome if somewhere on his list was a black or Hispanic conservative. That would be my first pick, simply for the shock value. He will have the opportunity for others.
  2. End the DACA executive order, and use the data to notify people that it's time to go home. They don't have to be deported, but they should be told, formally, they are in the country illegally and to please go home. Also, a real effort should be made to notify employers that DACA exemptions have been cancelled and they should not hire them.
  3. Cut federal funding to sanctuary cities, and come up with whatever other penalties easily within reach.
  4. Tear up the Iran deal.
  5. End all discussion of TPP.

Longer short term:Repeal Obamacare. I would repeal it entirely, and just tell everyone they are back to four years ago. End subsidies. End coverage to 26. End guaranteed coverage, etc. Replacement is longer term.

Implement e-verify and the cost of H1B visas, as well as the necessary salary to justify.

Sign an infrastructure bill, ideally with some wall funding, to show bipartisan thing with Democrats.

Longer term:

Renegotiate NAFTA

Deal with Chinese trade abuses

Immigration bill with border enforcement, sped up appeals process, taxing remittances, and visa reduction.

Great list, Cal.

I would add one more. Trump shouldn't - and won't - begin any large scale deportations, but I hope he does some deporting to make the process cool again. Make some headline-inducing move to deport criminal aliens from sanctuary cities, for example.

Cliff -- Friday, November 11, 2016 -- 06:47:51 PM -- 10 of 1214

Taxes, taxes, taxes.

Did I mention taxes?

Lower the corporate rate. Completely rework the insane, inscrutable personal tax code. Repatriate the foreign funds held by American corporations (this first). Etc.

Yeah, I highly doubt federal spending will be cut under Trump. It's likely to balloon.

I love it. Trump promises to immediately deport two to three million illegal aliens with criminal records.

Make deportation cool again.

BTW, that's not a typo. He's talking about MILLIONS of illegal aliens being deported.

I was worried Trump might back off some of his more outlying positions once he gained office, but he doesn't appear to be doing so.

Ben Carson has apparently declined a role in the administration.

Wonder why? I can't see a reason for Carson to endorse him so strongly and then not want a job afterward.

Former presidential candidate Ben Carson says he won't join Trump's Cabinet because he has no government experience

Quixotic to the end:

"Dr. Carson feels he has no government experience, he's never run a federal agency," Williams told the Hill newspaper. "The last thing he would want to do was take a position that could cripple the presidency."

Other than be the President!

Jeff Sessions has taken the AG job. It's a good choice, but I think I would rather Sessions had stayed in the Senate and someone like Kris Kobach had taken over Justice.
