I made Julia's gingerbread cake over the weekend and it was excellent. One of my other gingerbread recipes suggested a couple of grinds of black pepper for some extra zing, so I threw that in. I didn't think it was so much, but when my dad affably offered a crumb to the rabbit, his entire lip sneered up like David Bowie and he ran into another room. So maybe less pepper next time.

Coconut cream pie: Top with freshly whipped cream, or do a meringue?

I've always used whipped cream, and I do not know how to make a meringue, but I'm willing to try.

Please answer soon! I have taken the day off work to bake pies, and I need to make a decision right away!

I thought cream pies were topped with whipped cream. I'm against coconut in general, but my vote is for the cream.

I'm leaning toward the whipped cream (with some baked coconut sprinkled on top!) because I know I can't screw that up. I'll bake the pie now, refrigerate it, and then top it with whipped cream tomorrow.

I wondered about the meringue because my mother always topped her cream pies with meringue, even though they are CREAM pies.

And anyone who doesn't like coconut cream pie makes Baby Jesus weep.

well, if you top them with whipped cream it's a cream pie. If you top that same pie with meringue it's a meringue pie. I haven't had coconut cream pie in ages.


I'd like to tell you I'm not supressing a snicker after typing "cream pie" so many times, but lying makes Baby Jesus weep, too.

Speaking of coconut, my best friend is coming to visit for the weekend, and we are going to do all of our holiday treat-making together, and freeze them for Christmas. I think I'll put macaroons on the list. Mmmmm!

My list so far includes sugar cookies, buckeyes, snickerdoodles, Russian tea cakes, and spritzes.

Mmmmm, the cooks at my uncle's restaurant make the BEST coconut cream pie and you can get it with either cream or meringue topping.

The Cook's Illustrated lemon bars are gooood! Whatever the cracking in the crust was about, it was no problem. The curd is still a little soft this morning, so I'll give it a couple more minutes of cooking time next batch, but they are lemony and rich and tender and yum.

Now I want to try Rose's but there's also the "don't mess with success" approach...
