What's New on the Supermarket Shelf?
Lori Dee -- Monday, June 21, 2004 -- 04:14:45 AMTried anything new? Was it good?

They advertise it, you buy it. Did you like it?
I have fallen in love with the new Ocean Spray Juice and Tea drinks. So far tea and cranberry is my favorite. I am not a huge fan of cranberry juice but with the tea it works for me.
Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Poptarts. Yum.
Not a new product, but new to the US, I guess: Rocklets chocolate candies from Arcor. They're South American, but starting to get imported here - I got mine at WalMart. They're comparable to M&Ms - there are plain and peanut varieties - but different enough that it's a novelty. Cheaper too. They're a little larger, diameter-wise, and flatter than M&Ms - they actually remind me of Smarties from the UK, but I've only had Smarties a couple of times, so the similarity could be in my head.
I did not know such a beastie existed. I must now (shamefully) search them out.
A new-to-me Ben & Jerry's flavor: Oatmeal cookie. Cinnamon ice cream, oatmeal cookie chunks, and pieces of fudge. Fabulous...maybe even the best ever.
Anyone tried Hershey's 'Swoops'?
They come in Chocolate,chocolate-peanut-butter, Mint-choc. and I think one more...
Anyway---they are a shape that exactly fits on your tongue where you can let them sit...and melt...mmmm.
Usually 'On Sale' for $1.50/pkg.
I do NOT like the swoops. They taste gritty to me. Plus, I feel robbed that they don't have a nice salty pringle chip inside.
I do like the Ben and Jerry's low carb chocolate icecream. Very nice texture. Most of the Atkins low carb icecream things I've tried have a slippery texture-- like Astroglide. Bleargh.
Lori, as soon as I saw the heading for this I thought 'ooh! the new Juice Tea!" Hubby's favorite is the peach one. I'm avoiding caffeine so I usually just try sips of his and they are delicious. Almost makes me want to experiment with making my own iced tea and juice drinks.
I have not heard of chocolate chip cookie dough PopTarts - are these the same as the chocolate chip ones or different?
I like the "Golden" oreos. No trans fat and the cookie part tastes yummy too, not just the frosting inside.
We got the oatmeal Ben and Jerry's last spring, and I like it very much. Have you gotten the Very Berry Graham flavor yet? Those two are the only non-chocolate flavors I actually like.
Yes. I thought science had created the perfect PMS food, and was outraged when I discovered there was no chip inside.
Ruby, clearly, we are on the same wavelength-- I bought them when I had PMS and was bitterly crushed!

Oh jeez... ew.
A product that I found at my daughter's supermarket upstate NY, but not at the supermarket where I shop (so I don't know if it's "new" or not) is Saran Disposable Cutting sheets. I don't use them exclusively, but sometimes they're more convenient than cutting boards are.
I've tried Swoops. I'm not a chip person, so I wasn't disappointed not to find a chip inside. I didn't really care for the first Swoop I had, but with chocolate, my inneraddictpersuader goes into action within 40 seconds, so I never had a chance and finished the lot at one go. Thank goodness I've been able to resist a repeat purchase. Not so fortunate with regard to Shrek large M&Ms, however--also relatively new, earthy colors, ogre-sized-- perfect for my own ogre-sized appetite.
Once upon a time, I worked in a chi-chi foodie place that sold chocolate covered potato chips. They really are PMS nirvana. They are also just plain yummy during all other times. If any of the major chip players were to reproduce this happy time from my teen years I would buy them by the case. (Hint to anyone with connections to major chip people. TELL THEM TO MAKE THESE!)
Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough PoptartsMust find these ASAP!
The Limited Edition Almond Joy White Chocolate Pina Colada candy bars are vile, evil things. Consider yourselves warned.
I usually eat a 'Slim-Fast Meal Bar' in the morning. They're quite tasty.
Well---they've come out with a new meal-bar that's Low-Carb.
And they are actually quite...disgusting! Ugh.
Why everyone has to jump on the Low-Carb craze is beyond me. Some things are better left untouched. I only hope they don't phase-out the original meal-bars!
I ate one bite of one bar and dumped the rest. They are *that* bad.
Consider yourselves warned! Hee
Here's a new (old) item: Jello Pudding Pops are back! Huzzah!
Huzzah indeed. The Jello Pudding Pops are the stuff of legend. I've seen stand-up routines focused on the disappearance of the Pudding Pops.
Must say that the new Press and Peel Saran Wrap is pretty damn great. Can cut to small sizes, can use to take a small amount of mushy stuff to work (like mustard) without having to use a huge container (relatively speaking) and the press part works every time.
This is really a smart, thrifty new way to use plastic wrap.
Jello Pudding Pops are back?
Oh, joy!
I heard about the return of Pudding Pops but then heard they were made by Popsicle now and figured it wasn't true. I am pleased.
And I thought I was the only one who loved the ice shell you'd get around the pops. I just wish the shape had stayed the same.
