Good to Great Bay Area Restaurants that aren't all that well known:
- Le Cheval, Oakland, Vietnamese
- Helmand, San Francisco, Afghan
- Kabul, San Carlos, Afghan
- Guaymas, Tiberon, Mexican
- Pretty much every restaurant in Menlo Park
- China Styx, Santa Clara, Chinese
What's up with that El Bulli guy in Spain and all the foam crap that he does? I thought that trend was dead, but lately I've seen his name popping up here and there. Dude, the guy serves, like, seawater sorbet. Why does anyone want to imitate this?
There is a wonderful, wonderful barbecue joint in Florida, on the highway on the way to the Everglades. I don't remember the name, but you can't miss it.
According to the new Gourmet, he's doing a chain of hotel restaurants that serve normal food. Like, that might actually taste good.
The foam thing is bad, but you know what Adria specialty I read about that has permanently scarred my mind? Salmon roe brittle. Like peanut brittle, but with salmon eggs instead of peanuts. YUMMMM-EEEE!
So Cathy, where is this Vietnamese place?
Some great restaraunts in northcentral Indiana, if anyone ever shows up here (my condolences):

Thyme of Grace (American eclectic)
Cosimo and Susie's (Italian and they treat you like you are family)
New Saigon (Vietnamese, natch)-it is FABULOUS
And yet, critics could not shut their goddamn holes about what a brilliant visionary this guy was. I dunno. It must have been the 1990s equivalent of carpetbagger's steak or something.
Okay, I couldn't find much, but according to this user review thread, Quoc Te has relocated to Sunnyvale and the food is still good.
It's the 90s equivalent of 80s lit-crit. "This is incomprehensible, rude, and painful! It must be brilliant!"
Wonderful Italian restaurant in Walnut Creek on their main drag. . . Stella something-or-other. . . Bella Stella? Stella D'Oro? Anyway, it's very good, but I haven't been there for about 3 years. Also, in Napa in the newly renovated warehouse area that houses Coppia, there is a marvelous CA/Italian place. I'm not much good since I don't remember names, though.
Oh, we had a really good meal in an unexpected place recently; the restaurant that just opened on the ground level under the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion in L.A. Usually restaurants that have a captive theater audience can pretty much suck and get away with it, but Kendall's Brasserie turned out to be excellent. And a beautiful interior; it's all done up in cut glass and carved oak and wrought-iron sconces, and when we were there it was lighted and garlanded for the holidays. I had duck in huckleberry sauce with (just one, sadly) foie gras ravioli.
There are several outstanding Chinese restaurants in Palo Alto, so it might be on the list.
Main Street in Walnut Creek is an abundant source of outstanding restaurants.
Here's a list of great places to eat in the Hudson Valley, NY:
Foster's Coach House in Rhinebeck. May not look like much, but the food is excellent, and most of the waitstaff are very good. Don't be put off by that old guy. He's nice, just gruff.
The Would Restaurant in Highland. High end, good food. Pretty off the beaten path, but not too difficult to find.
Miss Saigon Vietnamese restaurant in Poughkeepsie. Excellent food. It might look like it's not open, but most people just go there for take out (Vassar College is just on the next block), so sit and have a nice meal. They have good recommendations, if you can't decide.
Aroma Osteria in Wappingers Falls. They just renovated, and it's just gorgeous in there. The food is fabulous. Try the antipasto. I bet you've never had zucchini this way before. It's almost oven-dried. So very good.
Bacchus in New Paltz. Good beer, good food. Excellent salad bar, but the salad bar is upstairs. The shrimp quesadillas are to die for. Man, they're good. And they tend to mix the drinks pretty strong.

That would probably be The Pit. Yum. Now I'm craving BBQ. I'll come back and post some good South Florida restaurants soon.
Last time in San Francisco, we went to The Slanted Door and it was fantastic, down to the Belgian Trappist ales we drank instead of wine. I love Vietnamese food.
One of my favorite dishes is Ambala Dhaba's Ludhiana chicken. It's marinated in a spicy yogurt sauce, then cooked in a tandoori oven; it has the most amazing spicy smoky flavor. We order it every time we go there (at least once a month).
There are two Ambala Dhabas, one in Artesia and one in Westwood--both have the Ludhiana chicken, though I've never been to the Artesia restaurant.

Places I am daydreaming about in the Bay Area now that I am in LA for a few weeks:
Ebisu, in San Francisco, for sushi. Great food AND excellent service.
Giovanni's, in Berkeley, for Italian. Mainly for their great bread.
Jade Villa, in Oakland, for dim sum. I love "fat fun."
Plearn, in Berkeley, for Thai. I always order Rad Na for dinner which isn't on the menu but they always give me.
Pluto's, in SF/Palo Alto, for American-ish. I couldn't go too often but once in awhile is good.
Raja, in San Francisco, for Indian. Atmosphere is only OK, but the food is quite good.
Rojo's, in Palo Alto, for wraps. It's been so long and I still want it.
Swaggat, in Mountain View, for Indian. I hear the other branch is even better but I have never been. So much yummy food!
Ti Couz, in San Francisco, for crepes. Especially the dessert ones!
Places I am going to try to hit up in LA (mainly the valley) while I am here:
Chin-Chin's, fake Chinese but in a good way. It's the potstickers that I love.
Electric Lotus, Indian. I haven't been yet but I am going to try this this break.
Les Sisters, Southern. I love their smothered chicken.
Nicola's Kitchen, Italian. Yummy pizza for super cheap plus also great bread.
Pinot Bistro, in the Patina family, I guess I'd call it Californian.
