Christchurch quake toll climbs
related link: Toll much greater than feared

The death toll from the earthquake that struck on Tuesday, at 12:54pm (local time) currently stands at 98, but likely to double as USAR (Urban Search and Rescue) move from rescue to recovery. Of the four dead whose names have been formally released so far, two are infants.

The human toll is horrific, but so is the damage to the landscape.

The Christchurch cathedral (Anglican/Episcopal), from which everything in the city radiates, has lost it's spire

The Provincial Council buildings were one of my favorite, but is now just a crumble of bricks:

The Catholic Cathedral did not escape either.

I don't know what to say. What a loss.

Rebuild it all, just as it was. If only to demonstrate Kiwi resilience.

The death toll continues to climb - and with it the number of people we know who've been affected. It's tragic. An overseas friend described the impact on the country as being the (rough) equivalent of 15,000 people being killed in the US, when you compare the population numbers (4 million vs 300 million).

satellite view with display of all quakes since sep 4/feb 22/past 7 days/today. I don't know why it got to me so much, but it did - it just seems relentless.
